Stress, Burnout & Overwhelm
When it feels like there is always too much to carry
Stress is a normal part of life. But when the demands keep coming and there isn't enough opportunity to recover, your mind and body can begin to feel like they're constantly running at capacity.
You may still be functioning — working, parenting, managing responsibilities and getting things done — but underneath, you feel exhausted, irritable or increasingly unable to cope.
You might notice:
feeling constantly rushed or under pressure
becoming irritated by small things
difficulty switching off or relaxing
feeling mentally overloaded
struggling to concentrate or make decisions
feeling exhausted even after resting
withdrawing or losing interest in things you usually enjoy
feeling like everyone needs something from you
fantasising about escaping your responsibilities
thinking, “I just can't do this anymore.”
Sometimes overwhelm isn't about being unable to cope
Often, people experiencing burnout are actually very good at coping.
They push through. Take responsibility. Keep going. Solve problems. Look after everyone else.
And because they can keep functioning, they may not realise how depleted they've become.
Sometimes the question isn't:
“Why can't I handle this better?”
It's:
“How long have I been asking myself to handle too much?”
When pushing through stops working
You may have learned that being productive, capable or needed is simply who you are.
So when you're struggling, the response can be to push harder.
Just get through this week.
Once this is finished, I'll slow down.
Other people manage more than this.
But if your needs continually come last, there may never be a point where life naturally gives you permission to stop.
Eventually, your mind and body may begin demanding what you haven't been able to give yourself — rest, space, limits and recovery.
How I can help
Therapy can help you manage what's happening now, while also looking underneath the overwhelm.
Together, we can explore what you're carrying, why it can feel so difficult to put things down, and the patterns that keep you pushing beyond your limits.
The goal isn't simply to help you cope with more.
Sometimes it's about understanding why you have been carrying so much in the first place.
